State Deputy David E. Witt In one week, April 8, 2007, we will celebrate the greatest event for mankind "The Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ." The resurrection of Christ is a historical fact. By it the Lord fulfilled His promise that He would rise on the third day and thus prove His Divinity, giving a sure foundation to our faith. When His enemies believed that they had destroyed Him, His real triumph began. To die to sin and to live with Christ is our way to victory and resurrection. Joan and I wish each of you and your families a Happy Easter. May you enjoy all of God's blessings this Easter Season. Many young men will join our Catholic Faith as they complete their RICA classes this Easter Season. It would be a great tribute to our Founder, Father Michael J. McGivney, if these young men were given the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of membership in the Knights of Columbus. It also provides them the resources to learn more about their new found faith and serve their parish, youth, community, youth and council. On the 15th of April our District Master, Phil Hahn, will conduct a 4th Degree Exemplification in Charleston. All 3rd Degree members are urged to contact their Faithful Navigators and obtain an application to complete their journey into Knighthood and join the 4th Degree. It is the most visible arm of our Order and as a member you earn the right to participate in any Honor Guard. April is designated as Squires month and all council are encouraged to sponsor a Squires Circle in honor of its founder Brother Barnabas. April 22 is the 78th anniversary of the death of Brother Barnabas and this would be an excellent time to honor his memory by sponsoring a Squires Circle in your Council's community, Contact Dennis Calaway for more information at (870) 761-5300 or e-mail ssc@calaway.org. The State Officers and I look forward to meeting you at our State Convention in Conway on April 27, 28 and 29th. It gives one the chance to renew old friendships and, of course, to make new ones. Our delegates have an awesome responsibility this year to review and approve the proposed resolutions that will guide our State Council in 2007/2008. In addition, you will elect a new slate of officers who will manage these resolutions and carry out the good works of our Order. CHURCH DIRECTOR Peter McNulty Update on the K.C. Retreat for 2008! Our director will be Father Tom Elliott, Pastor of Christ The King Parish in Fort Smith. The theme has yet to be chosen but will be soon and I'll report it to you at that time. Easter will very quickly be upon us. While we all make the journey to relive the Sacrifice that provides a new life for all mankind, let us all keep in mind the final joy - The Resurrection - the proof of man's redemption and the possible gift of Eternal Life and joy in the presence of God the Father and Jesus, His Son, along with the Holy Spirit. May God's Peace and Blessing be with each of you and may that Peace and Blessing be felt throughout the whole world for all peoples. Looking forward to seeing many of you at the convention. Community and Council Director Charlie Kuehl New Members are the lifeblood of the Order and to our Councils. As each of us plans for the rest of this year and the start of next consider the importance of membership recruitment. Our Supreme Chaplin, William Lori, advises that if we emphasize spirituality in our activities then our continued growth is a guarantee. Be active as a group in your local churches. Build a good working relationship with your Pastor and Your Church community. Remember to reward those with the talent to recruit. The stronger your Council gets the stronger your Catholic Community will be. A great Council activity is to inform members about the VIP Club. That is, the very important proposers club. This is a way that Members can be recognized by your Council and Supreme. Once a Knight has recruited 5 new members he is given a certificate and a lapel pin. Your council can order these certificates. Just contact Supreme Council Supply. Any member who brings in 100 members or more will be automatically sent recognition. If your council has a Knight or group of Knights that are particularly good at recruiting please reward them through this program. Encourage them to share their ideas with other in the District and State. These Men are Very Important Proposers. Another great way to build membership in the Knights of Columbus and help your Church community is by asking to speak during an RCIA meeting. The Rite of Christian Initiation is the official program where adults learn about their Faith while preparing to come into the Church. This is an opportunity for your Council to educate your Parish about your service projects and your works of charity. This offer to the candidates to join our lay ministry will be a welcoming to the Church and strength for their Faith. Consider a conducting a vocation workshop. Invite Clergy, Deacons, Sisters and Brothers who will explain their callings, occupation and educational requirements. Have Brother Knights on hand to give information about our Lay Ministry. We have many good people who will choose a religious life. All they need is an educational nudge. So as you plan for the end of this year and next, encourage your good recruiters, be positive in accepting new ideas and Keep Christ in the Knights. Don't you have a Knight and his family that need to be recognized! John and Becky Donahue family of Council 6454, Eureka Springs were selected as winners for the January 2007 "Family of the Month" contest. The Donahue's name was obtained through a random drawing held at the Supreme Council office from among the nominees submitted by councils throughout the order. The Donahue's have received a beautiful statue of the Holy Family from Supreme Council. Thank you, to the councils that submitted reports to Supreme for January's Family of the Month. Nine Arkansas councils participated in the November "Family of the Month" contest. Keep up the good work. For those councils not participating, you are missing a great opportunity. See You at Convention. GENERAL AGENTS COLUMN Fred Ward There is something new in the neighborhood - THE ARKANSAS STATE COUNCIL KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS-CHARITIES INC - a 501-3c. This has been set up to provide grant funds for scholarships for schools and colleges for the education of Priests, Deacons, and Sisters. In addition, this corporation will offer interest free loans to those ordained in the Roman Catholic faith and to promote charities sponsored by the Arkansas State Council Knights of Columbus and its subordinate councils. Where are the funds coming from to support this charity - from life insurance policies and annuities of our members. When you purchase a life insurance policy and make the owner and beneficiary the state council charity - the premium, most of the time - will be taken on your income tax as a charitable donation - the reason I say most of the time is because there could be certain situations where it may not be - check with your accountant and your attorney if there is any question about the premium being tax deductible. To participate be sure and see your field agent. Father McGivney Guild Mike J. Mitchell State Chairman DID YOU DRIVE IT HOME? Last month I came to you and asked you to DRIVE IT HOME. Did you? We have just celebrated the 125th anniversary of the founding of the Knight of Columbus. Father Michael McGivney dreamed of this organization and the benefits that it could provide to a group of tired faithful hard working Irish immigrants to this country. These people were often looked down on and given the poorest most degrading and dangerous jobs just because they were Catholic and they were immigrants. Father McGivney wanted a place where these men could serve God, Church and also mankind doing so with Fraternity, Unity and Charity. Father McGivney would still be out there recruiting members if he was still with us and he would be DRIVING HOME the ideas that make up The Knights of Columbus. We need to do Father McGivney's' work in his absence because as long as we do his presence lives on in all Knights of this proud Order. Ask a fellow Catholic man to join our order, help him and get him involved just as Father McGivney would be doing 125 years ago and just as Father McGivney is still doing today through every Knight as we all DRIVE IT HOME for membership growth in the Knight of Columbus. Report all intercessions granted to the Father McGivney Guild to help with canonization of Father McGivney and JOIN THE GUILD which is easy at www.fathermcgivney.org or fill out the attached form and simply mail it in to get your regular newsletter updates from the Guild about Father McGivney. Remember DRIVE IT HOME for new member sign up in the Knights of Columbus, do it for Father McGivney and do it for the well being, security and the pride that it will bring to each new member. You can make a difference all you have to do is ask a friend to join!!! Father McGivney was ONE man. It all starts with the power of ONE. Now the ONE is you. Go ask someone to join the Knights of Columbus!!! 7TH ANNUAL SPECIAL OLYMPICS GOLF TOURNAMENT Al Smith Entry forms are now available at all golf courses for the 7th Annual Arkansas Special Olympics Golf Tournament sponsored by the NWA Knights of Columbus. Borne Immediate Past State Deputy This is the latest update on the health of Immediate Past State Deputy, Lee C. Borne. Please keep me in your prayers. I had my angiogram yesterday and the Doctor found complete blockages in two of my bypasses. He does not recommend any further surgery since a stent would not work and my blood flow is sufficient due to the collateral arteries being formed off of my capillary arteries. The blood flow to my body and legs & feet is good. For about one week, I can only sit in one place for about 15 minutes. Otherwise I have to be walking or lying down. The recliner in a down position is OK. I was checking on the Internet this morning and there are some new non invasive procedures to use in cases like mine. Having blockage in a by pass is common, but usually works itself out with collateral action with the capillary arteries by finding new routes for the blood to flow. I have an appointment with the Doctor tomorrow morning and I will ask him if he mind me getting a second opinion from UAMS in Little Rock. He didn't mine in the past for both of us. I will keep you posted. Lee lcborne@sbcglobal.net Membership Corner Arthur Brannen March 29, 2007 is the 125th anniversary of the Knights of Columbus. Let us celebrate this great occasion by working to attain "STAR COUNCIL" in all of our Councils. We have several councils that are within striking distance with a little more effort. I have heard a lot about wanting quality members in our councils. We do not know which potential member is going to be a quality member. It takes the sponsors and Brother Knights to help new members to become QUALITY members by guiding him to attain his goals in the Knights of Columbus. It contained guidelines for Parish Round Tables (Form 2632 4-04). The following highlights are provided for your convenience: Establishing a Parish round Table The Grand Knight decides which area parishes will be served. All council members belonging to those area parishes are automatically part of the round table. The Grand Knights and a Knight parishioner call on the pastor to offer help and appoint a Parish Round Table coordinator. Grand Knight completes the Report of Parish Round Table Coordinator (Form 2629). Operating a Parish Round Table The appointed coordinator is the designated leader. No regular meetings are held and there are no dues. Coordinator visits the pastor frequently to ask if he needs any special help. Pastor's involvement is entirely at his discretion. The purpose of the Round Table is to lighten his workload not add to it. Coordinator assigns those Knights most qualified to carry out any specific needs of the Pastor. If necessary he can request the help of all council members. Communicating and Reporting Within the Parish Roundtable Coordinators report to the council during business meetings, use the parish bulletin to communicate with its parishioners and submit pictures to Columbian Magazine. Complete details can be found in the Guidelines for Parish Round Table (Form 2632 4/04) and "Surge .With Service" (Form 921-06) Page 9. Church Director Buddy Vogler PRESS RELEASE As I was at Subiaco Abbey during our recent Retreat, I asked if they had kept any records of our Annual Knights of Columbus Retreats. Miss Carol Geels, Secretary in The Coury House Retreat Center researched the files and recently sent a list of the Retreats to me. Their records extended back to 1995. And I am sure there were other Retreats before this, but no records were found. Brother Knight Ben Parson of Pine Bluff Council 01153 was the State Church Director at this time. He served faithfully in that capacity until his death of November 16, 1998. He encouraged me to attend the Retreat at a State Convention when I was Grand Knight of Council 00812, and I attended my first Retreat in 1997. After Ken died, a new Church Director was in order and with my experience with Subiaco as a 1947 graduate and an active Alumnus, I volunteered for this position and was appointed by Phillip Hahn, the State Deputy at the time. As of the end of this term in June 2007, I am resigning and wish to thank all of the Knights, their Ladies and guests who have attended so faithfully, making each year better than the previous ones. Also I want to thank my wife, Theresa, for all of her help and support over these years. The Coury House records of our Knights of Columbus Annual Retreats are as follows: 1995 Fr. John Kerr 24 couples & 5 singles Special Fund Article John Hertzog Did you know that The Arkansas State Council through its 53 Councils votes on and approves some 33 Resolutions each year? Of these 33 Resolutions, 26 approve money to support the Diocese of Little Rock, Special Olympics, March for Life, our State Chaplin, Persons with Disabilities, and the widows of our Past State Deputies. In all, we have committed ourselves to over $25,000 in CHARITABLE giving. Do you know were 100 % of that money comes from? It comes from YOU and YOUR COUNCIL or ASSEMBLY. Without your generous individual gifts of $10, $20 or $50 or your Councils support of $50, $100, or $500 through the annual Fund Raising efforts of our Director George Dailey, things like Hurricane Katrina support, the new Knights of Columbus stained glass window at St Andrews Cathedral, and $10,000 of support to Diocesan Programs would not happen. Gentlemen we are the "KNIGHTS" of the "CHURCH." We are the leaders of the FAITH. The First lesson taught in the Fist Degree is CHARITY! Right now only 20% of the total individual Knights are participating and barely 50% of Councils are making the effort. WE or the KNIGHTS, WE are the CHURCH, WE are the LEADERS! Please pick up the CROSS and make US succeed. Thank you. SPECIAL OLYMPICS Lee C Borne, IPSD It is that time of the year again to make plans to volunteer for the Special Olympics being held at Harding University in Searcy from Thursday May 24th through Saturday May 26th. In 2005 we had 12 knights from 4 councils who volunteered to help at the games. In 2006 we had 25 Knights and 9 wives of those Knights from 9 councils who volunteered for the games. We did have 12 other volunteers from Hot Springs Village and Jacksonville also there. That was a tremendous improvement, but when considering that we have 29 councils with over 3700 members living within 110 miles from Searcy, volunteer improvement is needed. We should have more Knights there to help the handicapped athletes gain their self confidence. The handicapped are mostly told that "You can't do it." but with Special Olympics it is "You can do it. All you need is a chance". Their motto is "Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt". Working with the handicapped brings as much joy to the volunteer as it does to the athletes and their families. The success of the games has been possible by the dedication of many volunteers who know that handicapped individuals have important contributions to make to society. No matter how you chose to help, you will be participating in three principles of our Order; Unity, Charity and Fraternization. Thursday is setup day and we already have the necessary help; however, volunteers are needed on Friday from 8 to 5 and on Saturday from 8 to 12. With enough volunteers we try to have breaks every 2 hours. Lunch and soft drinks will be provided. SEE YOU IN SEARCY ON FRIDAY AND SATURDAY, MAY 25th and 26th. CANDADATES FOR STATE OFFICE 2007 - 2008 Dudley Wells State Advocate STATE DEPUTY STEVE BELL STATE SECRETARY DUDLEY WELLS MICHAEL CRIMMINS STATE TREASURER JOHN HERTZOG STATE ADVOCATE MARK MORGAN STATE WARDEN NO ONE HAS INDICATED THEY ARE RUNNING Fraternally, Dudley Wells State Advocate Youth Director Clif Quick REMEMBER ROGER MARIS? Remember the year Roger Maris broke Babe Ruth's home run record? Because he didn't do it in the same amount of games that the Babe did, major league baseball placed an asterisk (*) after the home run number. Well, I have brought Roger into this year's free throw contest. About two weeks before our state free throw contest a Grand Knight called asking me to move the date. I replied I couldn't and he still asked a few more times. When I asked what the problem with the date of March 10th, apparently several of the local winners had a conflict on that day. Having been in Arkansas only about three years and not knowing any better, I tried to help the brother Knight out and said to have the youngsters shoot their state round locally and bring the score sheets to me. If I could work them in with the rest of the contestants, I would be glad to and if they tied with anyone, the person there would be the winner. When I got to Conway and brought the matter before the several of the Knights there who have run the state championships for many years, I was informed that there was a rule that all shooters had to shoot with the same ball, in one attempt to try to make all factors equal. A Grand Knight also later informed me that at some previous state meeting or convention it was said that you had to be at the state free throw contest and shoot there to qualify for any awards. This dilemma I put myself in without knowing is an example of what our State Deputy and State Officers have been attempting to rectify by having all current State Officers and State Directors keep a notebook on their area so future officers and directors will have a list on do's and don'ts, etc. when they take a that state position. This had not been done by my worthy predecessors for the Youth Director's position and no one had probably even thought of previously doing it. As a result of finding out the above information at the state meet, I decided to present the awards in each age category to those who were there shooting, as had been agreed to by some of our brother Knight elder statesmen of the past before my time. However, for those who did shoot outside the state meet, if their scores qualified as good enough, I am listing them below with Roger's now-famous asterisk (*) after their score. If a child can't make a state meet and scores their state level competition outside of the state arena and is good enough they ought to be recognized for what they can accomplish while realizing that the recognition is all they qualify for. If this isn't satisfactory, I am sure that at the State Convention or a state meeting those wiser than me will get together and set down a set of guidelines for those who will hold this departmental position in the future. Regardless if it is when I am in a classroom, on an athletic field as a coach or an official at any level, or working with the Knight contests, I have always tried to do what is best for the people who are there at that moment, and sometimes situations arise which just can't be worked out to everyone's satisfaction. All I can do is to try to do my best and hope that it is good enough at the day's end. It has been an honor to have the opportunity to be your State Youth Program Director for the past two years, to meet and work with so many across this state, and I wish to thank you for your support. Especially Conway Council #4143's Youth Director Gary Walter, Grand Knight Donnie Lock, the District Deputy Mike Sartain, and all the brother Knights who have shown up to help out each year. Without your time and help the state free throw championship would not be possible or run as smoothly. With the State Convention coming up later this month we will have brother Knights elected and appointed to many new positions at the state level. I am sure that who ever the Youth Program Director is next year will learn from the notebook I am putting together and continue to add to it for his successors , and with the experience that they bring to the position they will serve this state as well or better than I hope I have. Poster and essay winners will be in next month's newsletter. Pat Franz '78 Camp Director State Fund Raiser George Daily To: All Grand Knights and District Deputies We have one month before the Convention. I ask you to please remind your membership of the Fund Raiser. Our donations are down this year and it is not to late to send in a donation. We have some 5000 members who have not made a donation of any amount and 12 Assemblies and 31 Councils who have not replied. Thank You, George VOCATIONS DIRECTOR Peter McNulty My Brother Knights, we are meeting this month to elect new officers and make reports of our endeavors and efforts over the past year. Each council should report on their vocation efforts. I will look forward to your reports and to consider how we may improve this support for each of our seminarians in the forthcoming year. Msgr. Scott Friend will be a speaker and provide data on how our support will be needed next year since there will be additional seminarians to add to our list of candidates to work in God's vineyard. The forms booklet indicates June 30 as the cut-off date to apply for your refunds. Keep in mind that is the deadline! You can send in your report to Supreme at any time you have the required information: the photocopy of the cancelled check or a thank you note from the seminarian. Looking forward to seeing many of you at the convention. Keep all the seminarians in your daily prayers. Persons with Disabilities Program John Hertzog The Persons with Intellectual Disabilities had a GOOD year with 30 councils participating. That's a 58 % participation rate, NOT 100%. Collectively we raised $54,348.53, returned $45,814.17 to your local communities, and presented $8,534.81 to ARC of Arkansas, the State's designated charity. Twenty-two Councils did not participate this year. The Persons with Disabilities Program helps YOUR community, helps the State Council directly, and provides you favorable publicity locally. For those of you who participated; Thanks-a-million. For those of you, who did not, please put the second week of October on your planning calendar, plan to participate next year, and organize you CHARITABLE event to coincide with the State Councils' "Tootsie Roll Drive."
