Scranton Council 14619 is named after former Subiaco Abbot Raphael DeSalvo. The charter was presented by District 09 District Deputy Charlie Ketter at the 10:15 AM Mass, which was celebrated by retired, long-time pastor Father Dennis Sorries and concelebrated by current pastor and Council Chaplain Father Barnabus Maria Susai and current Subiaco Abbot Jerome Kodell. Twenty one of the 65 charter members were recruited as new members under the leadership of new Grand Knight Tom Schriver, ably assisted by New Council Development Chairman and Past State Deputy Jimmy McKinnon and District Deputy Charlie Ketter. Grand Knight Tom Schriver is well on his way to achieving Star Council in his first year. Please join me in congratulations and wishes of great success to our new Scranton Brother Knights. New council development is not only historic and extremely rewarding, it is the pinnacle of the “can do” spirit and of offering the benefits of Columbianism to every eligible Catholic man. Even though we have achieved our Supreme Council quota of two new councils, we have a lot of activity for additional new councils coming on board this fraternal year. District 04 District Deputy Tom Smith has conducted an informational meeting to parishioners for a new council at Hope, District 11 District Deputy Charles Reinhart has a parish dinner planned to introduce the Knights of Columbus for a new council at Forrest City and District 01 District Deputy Kenny Petty has a meeting scheduled to establish a Hispanic council at St. Edwards and or St. Theresa’s in Little Rock, with kind words of encouragement from Bishop Taylor. Not to be outdone, District 06 District Deputy Mike Mitchell has his second new Hispanic council 1 planned for Berryville with activities commencing in February. District 09 District Deputy Charlie Ketter’s efforts to establish a Hispanic council at Immaculate Conception in Ft. Smith have been temporarily delayed due to Msgr. Oswald’s illness. Please continue to keep Msgr. Oswald in your prayers as he is making steady progress. Msgr. Oswald has been a great friend and supporter of the Knights of Columbus for years. Finally, our new Grand Knight Trung Nguyen at Blytheville Council 02857 is helping to direct our efforts to establish a Vietnamese council at Christ the King Church in Ft. Smith. If it sounds like I have “gone over the edge”, we already have Vietnamese councils in California and Massachusetts. I hope you will have the opportunity to meet Grand Knight Trung at our State Convention in Hot Springs. With continued emphasis on new membership at each council, we have a great opportunity to achieve a record number of Star Councils this year and to achieve Circle of Honor for Arkansas. I trust you agree that compared to much larger states, we may be small but can still be mighty. Together, we can determine that our being mighty is fact and not brag! VOCATIONS CHAIRMAN PETER MCNULTY My Brother Knights: Last month’s newsletter listed all the Councils and Assemblies participating in the RSVP along with the seminarians they are supporting. With the new year, we will be attempting to have even more participation! And there will be more! I have 2 councils, at present waiting to see who the NEW seminarians will be and are ready – committed - to begin supporting the journey to fulfilling God’s Call! There are several seminarians, as was previously noted, who are sponsored by multi councils. With the cooperation of all the councils and assemblies reporting their selection to the Vocations Chairman before issuing the RSVP award, a better means of spreading out the awards, in a more equitable distribution of available awards could be accomplished. Msgr. Scott Friend has a desire to see more equity in the support of ALL the men studying for the priesthood. Also, there are, at times, an increased need in some cases that could be assisted when we have an improved communication between the participating councils and assemblies with the Vocations Chairman. Msgr. Friend does inform me if there is a special or increased need. The Diocese is ever striving to increase the number of seminarians and Msgr. Friend has done an outstanding job during the past few years. The limited funds available to educate each of our candidates, is all the more reason we, as Knights, are looked upon to help in participating in the RSVP. My personal contact with many of the seminarians has been very rewarding and every one of them expresses their thanks for the RSVP support they receive I would very much appreciate, with the start of the new year, that every council have a Vocations Chairman appointed and that he and the Grand Knight communicate with me early on, to help the State Council accomplish its’ goal to see that every seminarian is supported through the RSVP Remember, the 2009 – 2010 class will be increased by 6 to 9 more seminarians, for a total of from 35 to 38 May God bless all your efforts, and all our Seminarians. E-mail:pmcnulty@centurytel.net Phone: 479-331-2341 STATE FAMILY DIRECTOR FRANCISCO OLGUIN Saturday Night January 17, 2009, Knights of Columbus Devine Mercy Council 13829 held a Parish Potluck Dinner & Family Fun Knight. Approximately 37 people attended the event and enjoyed food galore and savored different Ethnic dishes. Father Tyler opened with a blessing, followed by the feast and a lot of conversing with friends and family, and then came the variety of games for persons of all ages. A good time was had by all and we look forward to our next “FAMILY FUN KNIGHT” when we will offer door prizes for the adults. IN SERVICE TO ONE IN SERVICE TO ALL Francisco Olguin State Family Director STATE ADVOCATE MICHAEL KIEFFER RULES GOVERNING INDIVIDUALS RUNNING FOR STATE OFFICE The Supreme Advocate has ruled that a council may pass a Resolution endorsing the candidacy of a member and mail a copy of that resolution to all councils within the candidate’s jurisdiction. A copy of the resolution may be sent to State Officers, Past State Deputies, District Deputies, Program Directors and Grand Knights. This information (candidates for office) may be listed in the State Newsletter. These resolutions may be posted on the Arkansas State Councils website Appeals for public support: Issuing appeals for, or soliciting by virtue of his membership in the Knights of Columbus, aid or assistance or support by or in behalf of or announcing candidates for public office or candidates (including delegates to State and Supreme Councils) in another society or body or in the Order is not allowed. Any member who knowingly permits or acquiesces in such appeals, solicitation, etc, shall, if elected, be ineligible to hold office. Banners and/or signs are only allowed in hospitality rooms at the state convention. These banners will not be allowed to be attached to windows, so all others will be able to see them from outside the room. All campaigning will be done face to face, mostly done in or near the hospitality rooms. Once the business meeting starts at the convention, campaigning must stop. Campaigning cannot be done in the business meeting room. Handing out buttons, flyers, cards or any other item at any time is prohibited. It is not appropriate to advertise candidates for office in the Convention Program. E-mail, writing letters, placing phone calls or solicitation at any other than the time specified or in the manner specified above is not permitted. REPORT OF THE PROGRAM AND COMMNITY DIRECTOR FEBRUARY 2009 JAMES W. CUNNINGHAM, JR. Now is the time for Grand Knights and Council Officers and Directors to meet and decide which of your Service Activities in each of the five categories you want to enter in the State Service Awards Contest. I bet there isn’t a Council in Arkansas who hasn’t done something of merit for their Church, Community, Council, Family and Youth. So why not fill out the forms that I will be sending out to the Grand Knights this month and maybe you will win a beautiful plaque for your Council. You have already done the hard work and you deserve the recognition. What you do is important to the whole body of the Knights of Columbus because it proves our purpose and inspires others to do the same. All that is left for you to do is to fill out the entry forms and mail them to me so that they can be presented to the judges. You also have a chance to enter your Knight of the Year and your Family of the Year for an award on the forms provided. There is also a form for a Small Council Award and a Large Council Award. In case you don’t know it, an award for the Council who gave the largest Per-Capita donation to Persons with Mental Disabilities will be given. An award for the Council which gives the largest dollar donation to Persons with Mental Disabilities will also be given. An award for District Deputy of the Year will also be given and that award depends on how well the Councils perform in his District. So you see there are opportunities to enter and win in a variety of ways. So please don’t let this year’s State Awards pass you by because you didn’t take the time to fill out the entry forms and mail them in on time. I must have all the entry forms in my hands no later then March 14, 2009. If you need extra forms you can copy the forms I send you or go to http://www.arkofc.net and print them from your computer. I wish all of you success and hope to see you in the winners circle at the State Convention in April. Vivat Jesus James W. Cunningham, Jr. jcunningham000@centurytel.net AR Program and Community Director HC 82 Box 81 Brockwell, AR 72517 PRAY TO END ABORTION PRO-LIFE COUPLE JON AND MARTI HASLAUER We had an excellent turnout for the Mass for Life and the March for Life on January 18th. I want to thank the Knights that participated in the Honor Guard from Assemblies 2054 North Little Rock, 2642 Jacksonville, 2857 Blytheville, 2060 Mountain Home, 0024 Little Rock, our former District Master Phil Hahn and State Deputy Jim Neff. We had 18 members in the Honor Guard at the Mass for Life and 11 in the March for Life. I want to especially thank Hot Springs Village Assembly 2316 for providing 8 Knights for the Honor Guard. Grand Knight Danny Naegle (Council 00812) pulled the State Knights of Columbus banners thru downtown Little Rock on a 4-wheeler borrowed from District Deputy 01 Kenny Petty. Several Knights volunteered as marshals or simply marched with signs to stand up and defend the sanctity of human life. Former Faithful Navigator Tom Nauman of Assembly 2054 North Little Rock was once again the primary marshal for the March for Life. Please note that the following Arkansas representatives were in attendance. It is important to know who is willing to stand with us in defense of life. Arkansas Senator Gilbert Baker ........................................... Republican from Conway Arkansas Representative Jonathan Dismang .......................... Republican from Beebe Arkansas Representative Andrea Lea ............................. Republican from Russellville Arkansas Representative Dan Greenberg .........................Republican from Little Rock Arkansas Representative Dawn Creekmore .......................... Democrat from East End Also in attendance was former Governor..............................................Mike Huckabee By the time this newsletter is printed, you will have already completed your FOCA post cards in opposition to this most deadly legislation. Our Bishop Anthony B. Taylor has requested all parishes conduct the FOCA postcard campaign starting January 24th & 25th. Our bishop is with us as a leader in the fight for the sanctity of human life. If your parish has not distributed postcards in opposition to FOCA please call the parish office to get this task accomplished in your parish. Also by the time of this printing: Thursday, January 22nd, was the 36th anniversary of Roe v. Wade and the legalization of abortion. From 4:30 PM to 5:15 PM on January 22nd, Council 07787 (The College Council) lead by Grand Knight Kyle Gallien, hosted a prayerful protest outside the abortion clinic in Fayetteville. They recited the Rosary peacefully demonstrated in support of Life and prayed for an end to this atrocity. Mass followed at St. Thomas Aquinas University Parish at 5:30 PM. In Little Rock a prayer vigil held by the 40 Days for Life committee at Planned Parenthood over the 11:00 AM hour on January 20th as an alternative to celebrating the inauguration of the most radical pro abortion president in our history. The 40 Days for Life committee met again to pray at Planned Parenthood from 11:00 AM – 12:00 Noon on January 22nd. Marti and I have had a change of plans on the ‘Voice for the Unborn’ baby bottle campaign. We expect to start rolling out to other Knights of Columbus Districts ASAP instead of waiting until District 01 is finished before rolling the program out to the rest of the state. In preparation for the Baby Bottle Campaign coming to your District/Council please be on the lookout for perambulators! Baby Buggies that is! Knights & family will work all doors of your parish after masses to hand out baby bottles and later to collect bottles full of money. Find old baby buggies or ‘Moses Baskets’ and paint them up, maybe add the Knights of Columbus logo. With great visibility this will be a membership drive as well as a ‘Voice for the Unborn’. Abortion is a local problem with a local solution. This Spring Little Rock will participate in 40 Days for Life for the second time. We will join with cities across the country in fasting and fervent prayer for an end to abortion. We will maintain a prayerful and peaceful vigil every day from 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM at two locations in Little Rock: Family Planning Services at #4 Office Park Drive performs surgical abortions and Planned Parenthood at 5921 12th St. & University Ave. provides RU486 chemical abortions through 8 weeks gestation. Maintaining a vigil at each of these sites will require many prayer volunteers. The most effective way to cover the hours is for a group to adopt a day of prayer. We need Knights of Columbus councils & family from around the state to adopt one day (12 Knights, 1 hour of prayer each). A small council or assembly could adopt half a day. Three Knights could cover 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM by taking two hours each. The vigil begins Ash Wednesday (February 25th) and will run through Palm Sunday (April 5th). Please look at your calendar, talk to your brother Knights and give us a call 501-221-9925. You can also get more information and sign up for a prayer hour at www.40daysforlife.com/littlerock. Thank you in advance for your participation in this important effort to fight abortion in our city and throughout the country. Fayetteville will also have a 40 Days for Life prayer vigil. VIVAT JESUS – JON & MARTI HASLAUER Jon.Haslauer@sbcglobal.net Marti.Haslauer@sbcglobal.net DISTRICT 03 ACTIVITIES WILLIAM E. BERG JR. DISTRICT DEPUTY, DISTRICT 03 District 03 has three councils participating in the Free Throw competition. The District level competition is scheduled for February 8, 2009 at the Stuttgart Jr. High gym, beginning at 2:00 PM. The District mid-year meeting/training program is scheduled for February 7, 2009 at the Stuttgart Knights of Columbus Hall, commencing at 10:00 AM. The Council 03998 (Slovak) Oyster Supper on Friday, January 30, 2009, will assuredly be a sell-out and a huge success. DISTRICT 06 HAPPENINGS MIKE MITCHELL DISTRICT DEPUTY, DISTRICT 06 I am happy to report that we have a good team in place in District 6. There will be a District Meeting on January 11, to cover the goals of our order for 2009. In the past year we have established 1 new council which we chartered in October. The new council 14609 is now at about 50 members. I expect that this council will be between 75 and 100 at the end of this Fraternal Year. I do expect this council to make Star Council and maybe even Double Star Council. The other councils in District 6 are in good positions to achieve Star Council with just a little work. District 6 has a new Insurance agent, Sir Knight David Talley from my home council 13609. I think this will enable all councils to utilize the standards of our new form 100 to meet the goals that I expect them to achieve in the next few months. Look for new happenings in District 6, they are already visible. Lastly, Thank You to all the wonderful hard working Grand Knights in this District. Without you guys these happenings would not be possible. DISTRICT 10 NEWTON WHITE DISTRICT DEPUTY - DISTRICT 10 District 10 is continually striving to uphold the doctrine and principals of the Knights of Columbus in all that we do collectively as a group, and as individuals, in our daily walks in our communities. State Deputy Jim Neff and District 10 Deputy Newton White met with Fr. Bill Elser and Fr. Joseph Ejimofor to discuss the probability of reactivating the Benton Council. It was decided that a membership drive would be started with letter from Fr. Elser to the Knights who were members before asking for their support and participation. An announcement in the bulletin and from the pulpit would be made for the other men in the parish that may be interested. A pancake breakfast will be held with the help of the other councils in District 10 on February 22nd to answer any questions that may be voiced regarding the Knights of Columbus and what they stand for. District 10 is preparing to host the Annual Knights of Columbus State Convention, April 17th -19th in Hot Springs. We have had some changes after meeting with State Deputy, Jim Neff, and Protocol Director Bob Peters. On Friday evening, two of our local tourist attractions have agreed to host the Knights of Columbus Convention Attendees exclusively. The Magic Lantern Theatre featuring illusionist Maxwell Blade, and The Gangster Museum of America will rotate their shows to accommodate all the Knights, Ladies, and youth that would like to see these remarkable attractions. The ladies will still be entertained at the beautiful Garvan Woodland Gardens on Saturday, but will enjoy a luncheon at the Hot Springs Golf and Country Club before going to the gardens. Also changed are the youth activities. The Mid-America Science Museum will entertain our young people on Saturday with activities such as a hands-on exhibit call “Engineer It”; a laser light show; and a ride in a virtual reality capsule. They will also enjoy a lunch in the cafeteria at the museum. After Mass, they will enjoy a swim party at the Arlington Resort Hotel. Registration packets full of information and brochures should be mailed out at the beginning of next week. PUBLIC RELATIONS FRANK LETZIG PUBLIC RELATIONS DIRECTOR In order to better publicize the good works that we as Knights perform each and every day, I would like to request that Grand Knights and Faithful Navigators send me information on notable activities their Council or Assembly have accomplished. If pictures are available, please send them along with the information. Depending on the information received, I will attempt to get the articles in the Arkansas Catholic, the local newspaper and/or the Columbia Magazine. The information can be sent by e-mail to “fletzig@sbcglobal.net”. CANDIDATES FOR STATE OFFICE DUDLEY WELLS STATE SECRETARY The following Brother Knights have announced they are running for State Office for the following positions: Jim Neff State Deputy Dudley Wells. State Deputy Mark Morgan State Secretary Mike State Treasurer Mike Mitchell State Advocate Gerald Krawczynski State Warden Submitted: Dudley Wells State Secretary FORREST CITY NEW COUNCIL The Forrest City new council membership drive that was scheduled for Sunday, January 18th, after the 11:15 AM Mass will be delayed for a couple of weeks. This is because of the bad timing on the same day of the Right to Life Mass and March in Little Rock. Also, this will give us a little more time to promote within the parish for a better turnout. There is a lot of interest from prospective new members and it has solid pastor support. It might be rescheduled after a 5:00 PM Saturday Mass with a meal. We will keep you posted as you might want to display your recruiting and culinary grilling skills!!!!!! INSURANCE FRED WARD GENERAL AGENT As of February 1st we have a new agent on board. His name is David Talley and he lives in Gentry, Arkansas. David will be responsible for the North West area of the State. He is married to Paula since 1976. So to all the Grand Knights of the following Councils: 04538, 06609, 06834, 07787, 09514, 12082, 12458, 13829, and 14609 – if you need to get in touch with your field agent his number is 479-524-2825. He will be visiting each council to meet you and your members. We wish David success in his new career. I still have some areas needing Field Agents, if you know of a member who has been down sized please e-mail me their name and phone number, or have them call me. My e-mail address is Frederick.Ward@kofc.org. NEW YEAR AND NEW KNIGHTS MIKE J. MITCHELL STATE CHAIRMAN FATHER MCGIVNEY GUILD As the new year is upon us we need to remember that we are the decedents of our beloved founder Michael J. McGivney. Fr McGivney was a provider of care and love for many Catholic families of the past as we can be today. There exists much work to be done in his honor. These things include especially the formation of new Round Tables and New Councils to bring the benefits of Knighthood to as many families as possible. There is a favorite saying WWJD (what would Jesus do)? I submit the following saying to you for 2009 that is WWFMD (what would Fr. McGivney do)? Answer? He would strive to help his fellow Catholic Brothers, and a good way to do that is to bring our membership benefits to as many new Knights as possible in 2009. Help us attain Sainthood for our founder by reporting and favors granted through intercession to the Father McGivney Guild. Join the Guild for FREE at www.fathermcgivney.org or fill out the attached coupon and mail it in. ROE V. He was well known & beloved by so many Catholics in Arkansas. He suffered from cancer for the last couple of years. They thought that they had it in remission but it came back. He was the wine maker at the Abbey for many years. He will be missed dearly. His funeral was at the Abbey this Wednesday, January 21st at 10:00 AM. God Bless Fraternally Yours Mike Gosnell Faithful Navigator FIELD AGENT JIM LUMMUS Received 01/19/2009 Please keep in your prayers Amarillo, TX area Field Agent Jim Lummus. He will be undergoing prostate/ urinary surgery on Monday, 19 January and they have found he also has at least 7 spots of melanoma which he will undergo surgery for on 11 February, 2009. Jim could have retired as an agent over 5 years ago but is the type of man you would want coming into your home. He has never been about selling anyone a policy to see how much of a commission he might make, but to see if a brother Knight and their family needs help, and then does his best to assist them if they choose his help. I was proud to work next to and with him when I was a Field Agent and he was one of my mentors. If the Lord needs him he will take him, but he is one man who is needed in both places and could use your thoughts and prayers regardless where the Father wishes him to be. He has only 20% liver function and is failing (from metastatic colon cancer). Cards from the Knights would be welcome to him but he is too ill at this time for company. All he can be offered is comfort and prayers. No chemo or radiation anymore. He is very sad that since he has been ill this past year, he has only heard from one Knight inquiring about his health. I’m sorry I didn’t contact you earlier but I thought our local group would have told you. He is in denial as he thinks he beat the lymphoma all these years and he can beat this too. He needs your prayers Thanks, Mary NOTICE: Please try to send your newsletter reports and messages to John Hollender, Newsletter Editor, by Friday, February 20, 2009, for the March 2009 Newsletter.
