With four months left to recruit new members, I have every confidence that the Arkansas Jurisdiction will achieve Circle of Honor. More importantly, we have the opportunity to achieve a record number of Star and Double Star Councils. Several of these achieving councils will attain Star Council status for the first time. This is very gratifying because it reflects the efforts and pride of the many who have played a part in making this a reality. There is nothing quite like experiencing a sleepy council awakening to the sweet smell of success. Recruiting starts with a member asking a prospect to join his council. The prospect wants to join to become a part of a council that supports its church, community, council, family and youth through our service programs. Their enthusiasm breeds more enthusiasm and all of a sudden there is a complete turnaround in attitude. Our district deputies have been a very large part of generating this momentum. Their assistance to their grand knights and councils builds a strong bond of confidence, pride and accomplishment. These are the things that cause Star Councils and it?s available to each council. Complementing our membership growth has been the addition of new councils. Our third and likely next new council will be a Vietnamese Council at Christ the King Church in Fort Smith. With Pastor and Father Tom Elliott?s support and vision, Grand Knight Trung Nguyen of Blytheville Council 02857, a six hour drive to Fort Smith, engineered a presentation at Christ the King on February 22nd resulting in twelve completed Form 100?s. We are going back on March 8th to complete the job with the balance of the thirty new members 2 required to start a council. We hope to have assistance from Supreme on March 21st for the exemplification and may celebrate their new charter at our State Convention. Also on March 8th, we are going to reactivate the Benton Council at Our Lady of Fatima Church. With the support of Our Lady of Fatima?s Pastor and our State Chaplain Father Bill Elser and the leadership of District Deputy Newton White, we are going to do what we do best. We are set to re-introduce ourselves with a charitable good work of a breakfast at Our Lady of Fatima, with all proceeds going to the school?s building fund. Little Rock Councils 00812 and 06615 are going to join Councils 06419 and 10208 to assist in Benton?s success. Please revisit the first part of the second paragraph above. I will save our new council efforts at Forrest City, Berryville and St. Theresa in Little Rock for next month. But I would be remiss if I didn?t mention the establishment of a Squires Circle at Fayetteville Council 06609 with a planned investiture of a minimum of 18 new Squires on either March 7th or March 14th. Due to the hard work and determination of Brother Rich Padilla, and the assistance of many, this may well prove to be their most historic event next to the signing their charter. It is but one of many new and innovative faith formation events under the leadership of Grand Knight Bernie Krumpelman. I wonder if these programs have anything to do with Council 06609 being over 300% of their membership goal. Again, please revisit the first part of the second paragraph above. Please continue to keep Msgr. Richard Oswald of Immaculate Conception in Fort Smith in your prayers for his on-going recovery. He has been a long-time supporter of the Knights of Columbus. Thanks to all for your support. We have much to be thankful for as we enter the Lenten Season. Blessings, Jim Neff Vivat Jesus MEMBERSHIP JIM PALMER Deer hunting season, Advent, Christmas, Ice Storms, tough economy and job market, March madness, and Lent is coming. Did I miss any? I along with many of you have not done enough for our State membership. Others have done more than their share and I thank them for their dedication. Why are we Knights and why are we taking the time to read this news letter? The answer for me is very complex. I am proud to be part of the Knights of Columbus. Whether it is visiting with a fellow knight who has some burdens in life and needs someone to listen and offer help; or supporting our Church and our priests. In the present time, are we doing enough to support the sanctity of life issue! It is important for each of us to take the time to ask ourselves who in our parish would benefit by being a Knight. What family may need the extra insurance protection available through the Knight?s? We have done well so far this year but there is room for improvement. If everyone who reads this letter recruits just one more Knight, we will reach our goal. If everyone who reads this letter asks at your next council meeting in March or April when are we having a first degree, we will make our goal. If you have a 3 candidate and are not certain of when or where there is a first degree please give me a call and I will get you the information you need. Let?s all make this the best spring ever for the Arkansas Knights of Columbus. Jim Palmer Cell: 501-230-1042 CEREMONIALS CHAIRMAN GREGORY L. That competition qualified 8 athletes for State competition in Conway on March 15th. Council 03998 (Slovak) held their annual Oyster Supper on March 30th at the parish hall. Event was a great success and all enjoyed the evening. Council 02780 (Stuttgart) will hold its annual Crawfish Supper at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Stuttgart on March 27th. This should be an enjoyable and, hopefully a, beneficial event. Bill Berg DISTRICT 06 NEWS MIKE MITCHELL DISTRICT DEPUTY DISTRICT 06 At writing of this letter we are in a full press to get out candidates for our second and third degree scheduled for March 01, 2009. We currently have 49 men committed with 1 more week to go before the degree. Eureka Springs/Berryville has a new Pastor in that of Father Shawn who was transferred from Rogers. Fr. Shawn is a very strong supporter of the Knights and is currently supporting our efforts to start either a round table or council in Berryville. We will also take one final look into the Eureka Springs council 6 to see if there is any interest in reactivation. While the State Deputy and I hope to succeed in both areas we can say that there should be a council in Berryville within 6 months if we have enough men sign up or if not at least a roundtable. I will be visiting all councils in March with a push on making star council in each one. All of us should remember Charity!!!!! DISTRICT 10 NEWS NEWTON WHITE DISTRICT DEPUTY DISTRICT 10 The First Degree Exemplification Team from Mena Council 07258 performed a mock Exemplification on Tuesday, February 17. The onetime cost of $70.00 covers the degree and includes the 4th degree baldric, lapel pin and banquet. Being a member of the patriotic degree should be something to be proud of being a Fourth Degree member. A special thanks to all that have contributed to the Dome Fund and the Master?s Fund and for all the good work you do in the Knights of Columbus. FOURTH DEGREE INFORMATION BOB PETERS, PVSM Hope this will help someone looking for a tux or one joining the Fourth Degree in the upcoming 4th Degree Exemplifications. GENERAL AGENT FRED WARD By the time you read this column Lent will already have started and you will be in ?sack cloth and ashes? doing penance for your transgressions. I certainly hope that one of your transgressions is not having enough life insurance to take care of your family when you go to your final reward. Life insurance an important part of your financial well being and should be treated as such. How is your widow going to survive in these troubling financial times without life insurance? Whether it is whole life or term, your widow and children need the Knights of Columbus Ins. protection that it affords. See your Knights of Columbus Agent today ? And as always if you know of someone ? or if it is you ? who is interested in a great career with the Knights of Columbus won?t you contact me today, let?s set an appointment, and see if this career is right for you ? my e-mail address is frederick.ward@kofc.org. MEMBER RETENTION PHIL HAHN, PSD If the dues first notice was sent out in mid-December and the second notice was sent in mid-January (as shown in the Financial Secretary?s Handbook), it is now time to send the Knight Alert. While this notice, signed by the trustees, is in the hands of the delinquent member, the Financial Secretary should provide the information indicated in the Financial Secretary?s Handbook to the Retention Committee, consisting of the trustees, grand knight and any other retention committee member. The retention committee is to meet, go over the information given by the FS and decide who will contact what individual delinquent member (personal contact if possible). Call to make an appointment or a meeting time with the delinquent member. Try not to discuss any reason for non-payment until you can meet. There may be a solvable problem that can help the member stay in. The committee member is to provide a written report to the GK. Should the committee member be unable to contact he delinquent member by phone or in person, a registered letter should be sent to the individual asking for the meeting. 8 This gives the GK concrete proof that the member is not at the last known address and that the phone may be disconnected. Give one month before the Intent to Suspend form (Form 1845) is sent to the delinquent member, namely, mid to late March. If the original letter was returned to you by the post office and you cannot contact the delinquent member by phone, note that on the form. Also indicate who the contact person was. Send a copy of the Form 1845 to the district deputy and the state deputy along with any copy showing what you may have done to contact the delinquent member. District deputies are still required to try and contact the person and then make a report on the back of the form and send it to the state deputy. The state deputy and the supreme council will also make an attempt to contact the individual. Each council MUST HAVE A RETENTION COMMITTEE. Without the committee the work of locating and discussing the situation with each delinquent member will be too much for one person to handle and to do a complete and efficient attempt to retain the member. If you have any question about the notification process, check the Financial Secretary?s Handbook or call me. NEW COUNCIL DEVELOPMENT JIMMY MCKINNON NEW COUNCIL DEVELOPMENT CHAIRMAN The State of Arkansas has created two new Councils this year and working on several others. One New Council is Scranton and the other is the Rogers Hispanic Council. We are working on a Council in Forrest City, a Hispanic Council in St. Teresa?s in Little Rock, two other Hispanic Councils but not ready to name, and a Vietnamese Council in Fort Smith. We hope others are in place by the end of June. If you know of an area that would welcome a new Council please let me know. We are working with our Priest?s in that location before a new Council is considered to be started. PENNIES FROM HEAVEN OZRO N. BARCLAY STATE PENNIES FROM HEAVEN DIRECTOR 2009 has started out as though it wants to rival 2008 in destructive storms or tornados with the ICE STORM that hit from Harrison through to the north eastern border of the state that left many communities without power for many, many days. Now we are approaching the season of heavy thunderstorms with accompanying very high winds or possibly tornados. If this does happen, even before your council or members goes out to aid in the recovery operations, please remember that there are funds available on a one time basis to aid the individual /family in their recovery, All it takes is a phone call to your grand knight giving him the circumstances so that he may request the funds from the State Council?s Pennies From Heaven Fund. This fund has been established as a one-time fund to assist those members of the order or of their 9 families, members of their Parish or members of their communities who are in distress due to a sudden occurrence of nature (a terrible storm, tornado, or flood), an accident or a sickness that has caused a sudden loss of income or large medical bills, for example. They might also have suffered a total loss of housing and personal belongings due to fire. And yes, they do not have to even be Catholics, just someone who needs a ?helping hand? in order that they may be able to begin the resume their life to where it was before the disaster. All it takes is for your grand knight to e-mail the requests for a grant from the State ?Pennies From Heaven Fund? and a fast response will be forthcoming. We strive to respond to your request so that a check will be in the mail within two days to the grand knight for presentation, most likely much sooner than that. Do not hesitate to call me to have any questions answered. Ozro N. Barclay, Director, Pennies From Heaven ob524@suddenlink.net 479-696-7950 Cell-870-736-2767 REPORT OF THE STATE PROGRAM DIRECTOR MARCH 2009 JAMES W. CUNNINGHAM, JR. This is it. This is your chance to win a beautiful engraved plaque for your Council to display and share with all your members and their families. After all, you deserve it. If you have questions or need clarification on any of the contest rules I will gladly try to bring you up to speed. What about Knight of the Year? Don?t you have someone special in your Council who you would like to honor? The same goes for Family of the Year; and what about your Council? We are going to have Small and Large Council Awards for doing just what you are doing. Please don?t sell yourself short; you are a pretty good example of what a Knight of Columbus is supposed to be. Well, the truth is we need and want you to participate and share with the State Council all the great things you have done between the last State Convention and now and the time is running out, so get on board. I wish all of you could win one of these beautiful awards and hope that all of you at least try. After all, you have as good a chance as the next Council and nothing to lose. Please take advantage of this once a year terrific opportunity that is sure to bring more than just a smile to your Council Members who have made the effort to serve others ?The Knights of Columbus Way?. Remember I must have the completed forms in my hand by midnight March 14, 2009. 10 Vivat Jesus James W. Cunningham, Jr. AR Program/Community Director (870) 258-3146 jcunningham000@centurytel.net PRAY TO END ABORTION VOCATIONS CHAIRMAN PETER MCNULTY My Brother Knights; February has been a good month. We are pleased to see that two (2) of our Seminarians; Mauricio Corrasco and Alejandro Puello have had the ministry of Lector conferred upon them. This is one of the minor positions conferred on their journey to the Priesthood. The Annual Knights of Columbus retreat at Subiaco was a wonderful experience for many of our Brother Knights and their wives. Why? We had the privilege of our Diocesan Vocation Director, Msgr. Scott Friend, V.G. as the Retreat Director. Msgr. did an excellent job of relating real life situations as to how our Clergy must exercise spiritual strength to remain true to their calling. He also responded to many questions about the journey to the Priesthood. All the attendees were impressed as to the attitude demonstrated towards our Diocese for the educational gifts they receive for the support from the Knights of Columbus and the prayers from the Catholic population that each of our seminarians receive. Some details were discussed relating to the cost the Diocese commits to, to support each seminarian and why the RSVP is so important. The Diocese supports, to the sum of approximately $32,000.00 for each seminarian per year. This includes a very small stipend for personal needs; this is where the RSVP comes in. The RSVP award provides some assistance for: phone calls home and in some cases, cost of transportation home during the Christmas and Easter Holy Days. Msgr. Friend pointed out to those in attendance that some of the men answering the ?Call?, many times, come from families with little means to afford the financial help to support them as to the need for clothing and clerical garments that the Diocese then comes to the rescue. I had a long and very fruitful meeting with Msgr. and he is working on the placements (seminaries) for the new candidates. He has promised me, as soon as this is done, he will send the data to me and I can 11 then start to assist both councils and assemblies to fulfilling our GOAL once again to ?SUPPORT ALL OUR SEMINARIANS WITH AT LEAST ONE RSVP AWARD?. One last thought; while at the retreat, Msgr. Friend impressed those in attendance so much that a spontaneous, voluntary collection was taken up to help seminarians in excess of $500.00. Thank all of you for your efforts to support the RSVP, and remember - the RSVP has two (2) parts: The financial The moral support through the correspondence to the seminarian you support. Let us all remember in our daily prayers ALL OUR SEMINARIANS! E ? MAIL: pmcnulty@centurytel.net STATE YOUTH DIRECTOR DAVID MCCALL Brother Knights, March brings warmer temperatures and ? Basketball!
