1 Arkansas State Council Newsletter Knights of Columbus APRIL 2009 State Council Website: www.arkofc.net 2 STATE DEPUTY REPORT JIM NEFF Dear Brother Knights: Carolyn and I wish all our Brother Knights and their families a happy and joyous Easter. Because God is answering our prayers for an increase in vocations to the diocesan priesthood, we have been given a wonderful opportunity to show our thanks in a special way this Easter. There will be a Holy Thursday collection for educating our seminarians for the priesthood. Holy Thursday is the day Jesus instituted the priesthood. Please respond as generously as you can both as individuals and as councils. If your council is able to make a contribution, and with your pastors consent, it may be appropriate to challenge other parish organizations to join you. Our 101st State Convention is fast approaching. It will be in Hot Springs at the historic Arlington Hotel, April 17-19. If you have never been to a State Convention, I urge you to consider coming and participating to gain a broader perspective of our Order. I can assure you a memorable experience as we usher out our 100th year of service to our church, communities, councils, families and youth. And you will delight in the excitement of the awards bestowed on our winning councils and individuals for their achievements during this fraternal year. Bishop Taylor will be the celebrant at the 4:00 PM Mass on Saturday, April 18th. Bishop Taylor is a Fourth Degree Knight, has been very supportive of the Knights of Columbus in Arkansas and has been generous in providing us with his wise guidance. If you’ve not had the pleasure of meeting Bishop Taylor, the State Convention will afford you a great opportunity to do so. You further will have the opportunity to meet your fellow Brother Knights from around the State of Arkansas. Finally, your attendance will give me the chance to personally thank you for the many contributions of your time and talent as it has been a great honor to serve as your State Deputy during these past nine months. On Saturday, March 21st we welcomed 19 new Brother Knights to our Vietnamese Council being formed in Fort Smith. One of the new members is Associate Pastor Fr. Peter Le of the new council’s home at Christ the King Church. Brother Le Nguyen flew in from Virginia to assist in the exemplification in Vietnamese. We added three other new Brother Knights at the previous Wednesday’s First Degree at Fort Smith Council 00996. This was the culmination of a wide array of our finest Brother Knights coming together for the betterment of the Arkansas State Council. The ones who made it happen were New Council Development Chairman and PSD Jimmie McKinnon, District 09 District Deputy Charles Ketter, Table of Contents .............................. The above follows our reactivation efforts at Benton Council 09396 on Sunday, March 8th. Councils 00812, 06419, 06615 and 10208 came together to host a pancake breakfast for the benefit of Benton’s Our Lady of Fatima school debt. Our Lady of Fatima’s Pastor and our State Chaplain Fr. Bill Elser and District 10 District Deputy Newton White together generated an enthusiastic turnout that resulted in $1200+ debt reduction and twenty five (25) Form 100’s being signed. Newton and the new officers are reactivating former members to add to the new members to get Council 09396 up and running again. Welcoming our new Mexican Martyrs Council 14609 in Rogers, our new Fr. Abbot Raphael DeSalvo Council 14619 in Scranton, meeting Bishop Taylor, celebrating our Fort Smith and Benton achievements and possibly acquiring new ideas for achieving Star Council from other councils around Arkansas, are all great incentives to join in the celebration in Hot Springs at this year’s State Convention. And if that’s not enough, Hot Springs’ famous azaleas should be in full bloom! Hope to see a record turnout in Hot Springs. Jim Neff Vivat Jesus FOURTH DEGREE MAX W. NUTT DISTRICT MASTER A reminder to all fourth degree members and invitation to all third degree members of the upcoming 4th degree exemplification on April 25th. The exemplification at Ft. Smith is in honor of Fr. Thomas Elliott. The exemplification starts with registration from 12:00 N to 12:45 PM and degree starting at 1:00 PM at the Knights of Columbus Hall. Mass will be at 4:00 PM followed by the banquet at 6:00 PM, also at the Knights of Columbus hall. Any 3rd degree member that is interested in joining the 4th degree, we would welcome your membership, if you have not been asked to join, please check with any 4th degree member for a Form 4 and information. The Conway exemplification is on May 2nd with basically the same schedule. This will be honoring Fr. Richard Davis, our present District Friar and former state chaplain. A more detailed scheduled will be mailed to all Faithful Navigators soon. Remember all Form 4’s and check from candidates must be sent to me as soon as possible in order for names to be in program booklet. Fourth Degree Assemblies are asked to take care of your contribution to the Dome Fund if you have not done so. Our state is at 65% of our goal, so we have a way to go. We are asked to contribute three dollars ($3.00) per member, of course if you can give more that would be greatly appreciated. Special thanks to the assemblies that have contributed some have went well over their goal. I will give a complete 4 report by assembly at the end of the drive, June 1st. A reminder for any 4th degree members that can be in the honor guard at the convention Mass by Bishop Taylor on Saturday evening of the convention to bring regalia. Thanks for all your good work and wishing you the very best. STATE FAMILY REPORT FRANCISCO OLGUIN STATE FAMILY DIRECTOR Brothers, What better time for us to express our love and devotion to Family Life than during the Lenten Season. I’m sure we all have our commitments we made for Lent, but let us not forget them the rest of the year. These are trying times with the economy and the high rate of under-employment and unemployment. Lend an understanding ear to someone that has been affected by all this and try to be supportive. Alot of people have not gone through a situation like this in their lifetime and do not know how to handle it. A caring handshake, hug or a nod goes a long way in letting others know that you really care. Please share the love and compassion given to us by the Lord Almighty. Vivat Jesus! Thank You, Ed Mitchell Chairman of the Round Table PRO-LIFE JON & MARTI HASLAUER On Sunday, February 22nd at 3:00 PM Bishop Anthony B. Taylor kicked off the Lenten 40 Days for Life by speaking at the 40 Days kick off rally. The rally took place on the street in front of the abortion chamber at 4 Office Park Drive in Little Rock (two 4x9 K of C Pro Life banners were used). Bishop Taylor said the day before he spent his day at Calvary Cemetery with three women from project Rachael. He conducted a funeral ceremony in honor of their unborn children lost to abortion. The children’s names were carved in 6 stone on a large monument. Below are the first two sentences of the Arkansas State K of C Councils job description for the State K of C Pro Life Couple. “Every council in Arkansas should join their Brother Knights in observing ‘Knights of Columbus Day of the Unborn Child’ on the Feast of Annunciation (March 25). On this day every Knight, Squire and their families should pray, fast and work to restore respect and protection to the child before birth.” The following is from the Supreme KofC.org web site. Knights of Columbus Day of the Unborn Child The Knights of Columbus has been a leader in the pro-life movement for over 30 years. With the Knights of Columbus Day of the Unborn Child soon approaching on March 25, the feast of the Annunciation, Knights have the opportunity to stand up and speak out against the evils of abortion. Councils use the Knights of Columbus Day of the Unborn Child, always a successful event throughout the Order, to come together with friends and family to host a variety of prayer programs within their parishes and their communities that show our never-ending commitment to unborn children and their mothers. Brother Knights we are called by State and Supreme K of C to prayer and fasting for the sanctity of life on March 25th. I am asking all Knights in the State of Arkansas to commit to one hour of prayer at one of the 40 Days for Life sites in Little Rock or Fayetteville on March 25th. More info is available on the 40 Days web site at www.40daysforlife.com/littlerock To contact Fayetteville 40 Days call Barbara Durkee 479-847-5535 or Debbie Magee 479-225-1061 or E-Mail 40daysforlifefayetteville@gmail.com We are asking the Knights of Columbus to ‘adopt the day’ of March 25th in Fayetteville and both locations in Little Rock for the 40 days of life prayer vigils. Please see www.40daysforlife.com/littlerock to sign up for an hour today. We pray every day from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM at both locations in Little Rock. 7 Vivat Jesus – Jon & Marti Haslauer LIVES SAVED Dear Friends, What an incredible joy it has been for me when I received word about each of these lives saved. Doesn’t it just seem impossible that the Lord has allowed us to be part of a ministry that leads to lives being spared from death? I have three beautiful stories to share with you. Please read each one and pray over each one. Please pray in thanksgiving for the life of the child, but also that the parents will continue to persevere in their commitment to carry their precious children to term. HAPPY SUNDAY TO EACH OF YOU. 1.) A very young girl and her Mother arrived at the clinic. It was obvious that the girl did not want to get out of the car, and her Mother was being very firm with her about getting out of the car and going into the clinic. Our side-walk counselor began to talk to the young girl about being under-age and about her Mother not being able to force an underage girl, even her own daughter, to have an abortion against her wishes. When they were showing the security guard the girl’s identification, the side-walk counselor continued to talk to her about being underage, even if an i.d. falsely stated her age, and no one being able to force her to have an abortion. Although all the words that were said could not be heard, it was obvious that the young girl continued to indicate that she did not want to go in. The next thing the side-walk counselor and prayer volunteers saw was a very angry and scolding mother take her daughter to their car and LEAVE. Praise God! . . . 2.) This morning a couple pulled into the abortion clinic, went inside and after some time came out and left. As they left, they rolled down their window to let the prayer partners know that “they had a change of heart”. Praise God for this! May we continue to pray for this couple and their little baby. Also, that God would place someone in their lives to help them continue with this change of heart. . . . 3.) A Hispanic man and woman, with TN license plates, arrived at the clinic and seeing that they spoke Spanish, I addressed them in Spanish. They were surprised and therefore listened to my plea and information on abortion. The guard was not pleased that they were listening to me and kept trying to get them to understand how to park the car, what they needed to bring with them, no purse, ID, and payment only. I translated what he was telling them and inserted my comments. I begged 8 them not to go through with it, and told them that they would not clearly understand what the workers inside would want of them. They went in anyway. 30-40 minutes later they came out! I approached them as they were driving out, and asked if I could give them information on post abortion. The woman smiled, and said that she had not gone through with it. Her husband told me that they did not feel comfortable inside. He did not like the manner that they had treated his wife. They asked me for my name and telephone number, and I gave them a St. Joseph’s Helpers (CPC) pamphlet and my cell number. She was 11-14 weeks pregnant. All of the stories of babies saved are posted on our website at http://www.40daysforlife.com/littlerock. David McCall State Youth Director 479-871-3981 STATE ADVOCATE MIKE KIEFFER The State Council Convention/Meeting is fast coming up. Shortly after that will be time for your local council elections. The Charter Constitution Laws, section 128 states: All officers, except the Financial Secretary, Lecture and Chaplain, shall be elected annually, by ballet, at a regular business meeting held between the fifteenth day of May to and including the fifteenth of June each year, and with the exception of the Trustees who shall serve for terms not to exceed three years. Equally as important as picking officers is the reporting to Supreme and the State Council who those officers are! Form 185 will be filled out and sent via the mail or internet and is due June 30th to Supreme. A state form will be provided to Grand Knights at the Convention and will also be sent to each council in May. These forms will ask for information on the Grand Knight, Financial Secretary, Program Director, Membership Chairman and Chaplain. This information is due back to the State Secretary as soon as possible after the election. You should be able to send this information no more than a couple of days after the election because the State Secretary has to turn this into a directory of all councils and assemblies by the first part of July. Please help us make this happen. For more information or questions on council elections see Charter Constitution Laws or the State Advocate. 13 VOCATIONS CHAIRMAN PETER MCNULTY My Brother Knights; In last month’s newsletter, I reported the cost of educating our seminarians. The Diocese has an endowment fund and has had it for a good number of years. Many councils and assemblies contribute to this fund when a member passes to his eternal reward. While the number of seminarians was small, the fund was very adequate; however, during the past 3 years, as we were blessed with an increase of seminarians, the fund has shone signs of stress. Our Bishop Anthony and Vocations Director Monsignor Scott have proposed a way to help the fund – both by placing $75,000.00 from the CASA campaign and a second collection on Holy Thursday. During this most holy season, I am asking all Knights to support this most worthy cause to the best of their ability. For those who receive the Arkansas Catholic, they will find a full page devoted to the support of our seminarians. I realize there are many who do not subscribe to the Arkansas Catholic and I am asking our Brother Knights to help get the word out to everyone. Talk up the benefits of supporting this effort. Times are difficult but the future of our Church will rest in the hands of these young men. Supporting all of them, that they finish their journey to PRIESTHOOD, will be rewarded in knowing that there will be someone to bring us THE EUCHARIST. May God bless and keep you all. Shortly, we can all shout: “He is Risen, indeed He is Risen!” Phone: 479-331-2341 Email: pmcnulty@centurytel.net REPORT OF THE STATE PROGRAM DIRECTOR APRIL 2009 JAMES W. CUNNINGHAM, JR. Let me take this opportunity to thank all those Council Officers and Directors who took the time and made the effort to enter The Arkansas Knights of Columbus Awards Contest. This has been an exciting, rewarding and busy time for me going over the entries and compiling them for the Chair Officers to judge. The many hours of dedicated volunteer programs our Knights in Arkansas have demonstrated is something we all can and should be proud of. I hope to see many of you at the State Convention where the Awards will be presented. Please continue doing what you are doing in the Knights of Columbus and remember to plan some events for next 14 year’s competition. Please make sure your forms are filled out and sent in to Supreme on time. Check in your Surge with Service and Forms Booklets for the necessary information. Vivat Jesus James W. Cunningham, Jr. AR State Program/Community Director PRAY TO END ABORTION PENNIES FROM HEAVEN OZRO N. BARCLAY STATE DIRECTOR A preliminary review of the “Pennies From Heaven” files reveal that there have been 34 requests for a total of $9,900.00 going to members or individuals/families in distress within the Councils/communities in our state. This statistic is remarkable as this was in a period of time when the State suffered through massive flooding, hurricanes, a disastrous ice-storm, let alone automobile accidents and illness. Surely, we have been over-looking a chance to be Charitable and help someone or family in need. This fund has been established as a one-time fund to assist those members of the order or of their families, members of their Parish or members of their communities who are in distress due to a sudden occurrence of nature (a terrible storm, tornado, or flood), an accident or a sickness that has caused a sudden loss of income or large medical bills, for example. They might also have suffered a total loss of housing and personal belongings due to fire. And yes, they do not have to even be Catholics, just someone who needs a “helping hand” in order that they may be able to begin the resume their life to where it was before the disaster. All it takes is for your grand knight to e-mail the requests for a grant from the State “Pennies From Heaven Fund” and a fast response will be forthcoming. We strive to respond to your request so that a check will be in the mail within two days to the grand knight for presentation, most likely much sooner than that. Do not hesitate to call me to have any questions answered. Ozro N. DISTRICT 10 NEWTON WHITE DISTRICT DEPUTY DISTRICT 10 On March 8, 2009 a pancake breakfast was held at Our Lady of Fatima Church in Benton. Thirty Knights from seven councils prepared the food, cleaned up afterwards, and performed recruiting activities. The Knights were from seven councils including 06419 of Hot Springs; Council; 06615 of Little Flower Council in Little Rock; 00812 of St. John Center in Little Rock; 06253 of Christ the King in Little Rock; 07353 of The Fisherman in Mountain Home; 10208 of Daniel Patrick Sullivan in Hot Springs Village; and 06398 of Father Joe Lauro in Russellville. Present were: Jim Neff, State Deputy; Mark Morgan, State Treasurer; Newton White, District Deputy 10; Ed Miller, District 10 Warden; Danny Naegle, Grand Knight of Council 00812; and Bill Durbin, Grand Knight of 06311. This event was orchestrated for two causes. First, under the leadership of Father Bill Elser, State Chaplin, the Benton Council of the Knights of Columbus is in the process of reactivation. The event was to reintroduce the male congregation to the Knights of Columbus. Father Bill sent out letters to all former knights inviting them to participate, as well as any man in the parish who is a practicing Catholic in good standing in the church. We had 16 men fill out a “Request to Transfer” and 21 men fill out a “New Member Document”. The second cause for this breakfast to help Our Lady of Fatima retire some of the school debt. All proceeds from the breakfast went directly to that cause. Norbert Stect will serve as Grand Knight and John McAtee will serve as Financial Secretary of the Reactivated Council 09396 in Benton. Wouldn’t you want to protect it from all hazards such as fire, earthquake, hurricanes, theft, breakdown, etc.? Sure you would! In fact, isn’t everyone a “money machine?” We use all our talents, skills, education and disciplines to “manufacture” money. What will happen to the production of this money if you “break down”? If your ability to make money is destroyed by an untimely death, how will your money machine be replaced? With a properly prepared and coordinated life insurance program, you can continue the flow money to your loved ones at the time of your death. ISN’T IT TIME TO GET TOGETHER WITH YOUR KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS AGENT! Mike Loftus 21 RV FOR FOUR SEMINARIANS JIM NEFF STATE DEPUTY Dear Arkansas Brother Knights: Msgr. Scott Friend has requested the use of a single RV for four seminarians to travel around the state from May 1 through the first week in August. Other than personal hygiene, they do not need anything elaborate and can even sleep on the floor. These seminarians will be assisting various parishes and mission churches where there might not be suitable accomodations. They will not only be providing much needed assistance this summer, but they will be gaining valuable experience in fulfulling their vocations as our future parish priests. My limited knowledge of RV’s is that these seminarians will require a large Class C or a small Class A vehicle. Renting or purchasing one is not a fiscal reality at this time. However, if anyone has a RV they could loan for all or part of this May through August 8 time period, or knows anyone who does, it would be a great assist to Msgr. Friend. Please prayerfully consider this as another way we can support the future of our church. If you can help or can suggest someone who might, please contact me directly at: cjneff@suddenlink.net, H-870- 425-9647 or C-870-776-495 Thank you and blessings, Jim Neff State Deputy 22 NOTICE: Please try to send your newsletter reports and messages to John Hollender, Newsletter Editor, by Wednesday, April 22, 2009, for the May 2009 Newsletter.
