We were treated to a moving homily from Bishop Taylor and remarks regarding priest reassignments at the banquet. Our Supreme Representative was PSD John Wainscott and his lovely wife Lady Linda from Utah who energized 2 us with his remarks and message from Supreme Knight, Carl Anderson. Our Host District Deputy Newton White did a great job assisted by WONDER LADY VICKI STANLEY. I feel humbled to have been chosen to serve another year as your State Deputy and will continue to give it my all in search of excellence. I want to congratulate our new State Council officers elect: Charles Ketter - State Secretary; Mike Kieffer - State Treasurer; Mike Mitchell - State Advocate, and Gerald Krawczynski - State Warden. Also, I want to thank our departing State Officers for all their hours of service and dedication to the Arkansas Jurisdiction. A special thanks to our least recognized but most appreciated and important Ladies who provide us with so much support. I received incredible support and guidance from our Program Directors and Chairmen. But the guys who are closest to our councils and Grand Knights are our District Deputies, and I was blessed to have twelve of the very finest. They earned their stripes every day in their efforts to motivate and assist at the council level where our accomplishments originate and are consummated. Many of our District Deputy's will be completing the traditional two year assignment, one five years, two are going to State Officer positions, one is moving out of state, one is moving to a night job and our State Convention Host District Deputy will be trying to manage the growth of his rapidly expanding business. A large void indeed, but a great opportunity for new Brother Knights to step up and make a difference! We exemplified 54 new Third Degree Knights at Searcy on April 26st. District Deputy Ron Wildman did a great job in setting this up. We owe a special thanks to our excellent Conway Team, under the able leadership of Don Moix, who performed a Second and Third Degree for the fourth time this fraternal year. One of our highest priorities this next year is to establish/re-establish at least one more Second and Third Degree Team. This is another opportunity for Brother Knights to step up, join a team and make a difference. As of this writing, we need 45 new members to achieve Circle Of Honor. Keep up the recruiting and get the Form 100s into Supreme via fax or email no later than June 15th. We have a record number of councils who have achieved their membership goal and are poised to achieve Star Council. If insurance is holding you back, consider soliciting non- insurance members to take out annuities. Seek assistance from your Field Agent, Fred Ward and me. Your council deserves nothing less than Star Council because you have earned it. We have tremendous momentum going into our next fraternal year. Our goals are continued solidarity with our bishop and priests, increased Star Council achievement, continued new council development and consistent, year over year Circle of Honor attainment. It's been a great ten month ride and I thank all for your continued support. "Every job is a self portrait of the person who did it. Autograph your work with excellence." Author unknown. Thanks for letting me play a small part in your many successes and blessings to all. Jim Neff 3 REPORT OF THE STATE PROGRAM DIRECTOR MAY 2009 JAMES W. CUNNINGHAM, JR. Cunningham, Jr. AR State Program/Community Director HC 82 Box 81 Brockwell, AR 72517 870-258-3146 jcunningham000@centurytel.net PRAY TO END ABORTION SPECIAL OLYMPICS MAY 23-24, 2009 HARDING UNIVERSITY SEARCY, ARKANSAS Location is Southwest side of Football field at Olympic Village NEED YOUR HELP RAYMOND PATRICK - STATE SPECIAL OLYMPICS DIRECTOR The games this year will be held at Harding University in Searcy on Friday May 22nd through Saturday May 23rd. Volunteers are needed to maintain the games for about 8 hours on Friday (8:00 AM - 4:30 PM) and about 6 hours on Saturday (8:30 AM - 2:00 PM). Special Olympics was chartered in Arkansas in 1970 and since then, the Knights of Columbus has been active in the State Games sponsoring and maintaining Olympic Town. Olympic Town is a games and handicraft village for the athletes to enjoy when not participating in their athletic events. Sine an event takes only about one half hour, the village games provide exciting fun filled activities between those events. Supreme started a Special Olympics grant program in 2005 to reward the jurisdictions that furnish the most support for the State Special Olympics programs. The program started in 2005 with an initial grant of $3,000 to each Special Olympics chapter. For the year 2006 and forward, the grant will be based on the 12 physical and financial support we give to Special Olympics. Report 4584, "Partnership Profile Report with Special Olympics" was to be filed for the first time by January 31st. Special Olympics is the quickest and surest road to self confidence. Always told "You can't do it." Special Olympics say "You can do it. All you need is a chance." Working with the handicapped athletes brings as much joy to the volunteers as it does to the athletes and the Knights are always grateful for any volunteers to help with the State Games. The success of the games has been made possible by the dedication of many volunteers who know that handicapped individuals have important contributions to make to society. No matter how you choose to help, your efforts will have an impact on the athletes and will be greatly appreciated by the athlete's families and Special Olympic personnel. Any time, talent, materials or financial support you and your family and friends can contribute will be appreciated. SUPREME AND SPECIAL OLYMPICS Over the past 40 years, the Knights of Columbus has raised and donated more than $382 million to programs for people with intellectual and physical disabilities. Among the larger gifts of time and money the Order makes annually is to Special Olympics and other programs for people with intellectual and/or physical disabilities. In 2005, the Knights of Columbus announced a partnership with Special Olympics. It committed $1 million over the next four years to grow the programs of Special Olympics in North America and pledged more volunteers for state and local games. The Order will also work with Special Olympics North America to expand its programs to countries currently underserved by it. The Knights' commitment to Special Olympics and to hundreds of grassroots programs for people with intellectual and physical disabilities is an expression of its belief in the intrinsic worth of every human being. RETENTION OR SUSPENSION PHIL HAHN, STATE RETENTION DIRECTOR This is the time of the billing process that you have to make the choice to retain or suspend a member. Before you begin the suspension process be sure you have a retention committee, and that this committee has contacted or tried to contact every member who has not paid their dues for this year. If the member is unable to be contacted, a registered letter with signature required should be sent to the last known address. Yes, this is expensive but it shows you have tried to contact the member with physical, undeniable proof. The cost is probably less than a possible rejection by supreme and a per capita dues. And you have him off the roles for next year. But if the member has been contacted by a member of the retention committee, was he addressed to 13 as a person and not as a number within the council? That is, was he asked if there is a problem or reason which he feels compels him to leave the council and would he tell the retention member what that reason is so that it can possibly be addressed and corrected. Has it been explained to the member what he loses by leaving the Order, e.g., loss of continual years of service, loss of the Fraternal Benefit for free accident insurance for his survivor, a Mass said daily for him and his spouse when either leaves this earth? If the member lost his job or cannot afford to pay, maybe a member will cover for him, or the council will carry him for the year (but not for year after year). Is he ill? Perhaps the form A Waiver from Dues is possible. No member is to be released because he cannot pay! If you have done everything possible to retain or contact the member and a Form Number 1845 Notice Of Intent To Suspend is being sent to the member, be sure to send the copies to the designated parties shown on the bottom of the form, i.e., the delinquent member, Supreme, the District Deputy and the State Deputy. With regard to the State Deputy, send a copy of any physical evidence you have which shows you have exhausted every effort to contact the member. Send also a copy of the back side of Form Number 365 Service Program Personnel because it shown the name of your Retention Chairman. Supreme wants all councils to have this position filled as Supreme wants the Membership Chairman position filled. I ask you this because it saves time and aggravation on your part as well as the State Deputy who must decide to approve or reject suspensions, especially if he thinks proper procedures and effort are not being done. Note also, councils that have not relinquished members for a number of years will not get all suspensions processed in one year. It took years to build up. It will take more than one year to suspend all. Do it gradually, best is yearly. If you have any questions, please contact me at either phil_unique@centurytel.net or pghahn@centurytel.net. Vivat Jesus, Roy Anderle Grand Knight Council 07258 NEW COUNCIL DEVELOPMENT CHAIRMAN JIMMY MCKINNON PSD This year has been a very active year for new councils in the State of Arkansas. Our goal was set by Supreme to have two new councils started in 2008- 2009. We have met that goal by establishing a council in Scranton and a Hispanic Council in Rogers. A Vietnamese Council has been submitted to Supreme for approval in Fort Smith. We are working on several other councils for this year or next year. We will work with the Parish Priest, the District Deputy, and the local council in the formation of a new council. I would like to thank the District Deputies and others that worked and spent many hours in starting these councils. The Knights of Columbus, with the three new councils is growing in membership and if you know of areas for future growth of new councils, please contact me at 501-803-0723. Jimmy McKinnon PSD New council Development Chairman PRO LIFE COUPLE JON & MARTI HASLAUER 40 Days for Life was well supported by our diocese and clergy. Bishop Anthony Taylor (picture below) prayed at the opening, the mid-point & the closing. It was wonderful to see our bishop on the street praying in front of the abortion clinic. He is a strong leader for the life issues facing our Church. As Knights we are proud to serve Bishop Taylor in every way we can. 40 Days was well supported by Father Gordon shown below in front of Planned Parenthood at 12th & University Ave. in Little Rock. Fr. Gordon FSSP (Picture below) and the Latin Mass Community of North Little Rock adopted many days and Fr. Gordon spent several hours on his knees at both locations. Below is a picture of James Pinto Jr. MEV (Picture kneeling) Pastoral Associate: Priests for Life /National Coordinator Missionaries of the Gospel of Life. Our Chancellor for Ecclesial Affairs Msgr. Director of Vocations and Seminarians Office from St. John the 16 Baptist in Hot Springs and Fr. Less Farley from St. Jude in Jacksonville. If I missed any priests, it means you managed to dodge our cameras. Many, many deacons also supported 40 Days for Life. Central Arkansas Knights of Columbus covered 12 hours of prayer at both Little Rock sites on March 25th Feast of the Annunciation with some help from the regular prayer volunteers. The Diocese of Little Rock staff sponsored a day and Marianne Linane from the Respect Life Office prayed on site for the entire 12 hours. MORE 40 DAYS FOR LIFE SAVES IN LITTLE ROCK 6 MOTHERS & BABIES WERE SAVED FROM THE INTRINSIC EVIL OF ABORTION While I was there a couple of young women drove into the clinic and one returned to the street and asked what we were doing to which I replied that we were praying for the unborn children and she then asked who we were and I said we were Catholics from local Churches and we were committed to forty days of prayer to help mothers in their time of need. She said she was going to the clinic because her people said it was what she needed to do but she was not so sure. I told her about the Arkansas Pregnancy Resource Center across the street and that it was free and could help her find other options. She returned to the abortion clinic and soon after they drove across the street and went inside. After about twenty minutes they came back out to their car and drove out and turned left and stopped beside me and a woman with me and told me thank you for talking with her and said she thought killing her baby would be murder and I said that I would have to agree and she then said she was unsure as to what she was going to do but she sure was not going to the abortion clinic. They then drove down the street and turned around and came back by and told us all God Bless as they drove by to leave. Praise Be To God. (Friday, March 6th) . . . I started my day over at Office Park Drive with a wonderful group of prayer volunteers from St. Jude's. Our beloved sidewalk counselor was there providing sidewalk counseling. I heard her gently call out to someone in the abortion center's parking lot, and then a young girl came to the fence to talk to the sidewalk counselor. They walked across the street and talked. After a while, the girl went back to the abortion center. The girl 13 and her mother were insisting on the abortion. The sidewalk counselor asked the girl to see if her Mother would come and talk to her. In a few minutes, while all of us lifted them up in prayer, the Mother and the daughter came over to the sidewalk counselor, and she talked to them for some time. After they finished talking, the girl and her mother got in their car and left. The sidewalk counselor said they were a "turn around." Praise God! This young girl had a definite appointment to abort her unborn child, and that appointment was not kept as a result of people taking time out of their lives to be prayerful Christian witnesses to those most in need. (Saturday, March 7th) . . . A girl was entering the parking lot in a car with her Mother and her 2 year old daughter. She was there for an abortion. The Security Guard told the Mother that the young child would not be able to come in, so the Mother had to leave. As she was leaving, our sidewalk counselor took the opportunity to talk to the Mother. The Mother shared with her their concerns about being able to afford to raise another child. The sidewalk counselor talked to her about the resources available next door at our Crisis Pregnancy Center and about what her daughter would be going through in the abortion clinic and after the abortion. She encouraged the Mother to call her daughter and see if she could get her to leave. The Mother drove away. About an hour later she returned and said that her daughter changed her mind and she was there to get 17 her. So she pulled into the parking lot and went and got her daughter out of the clinic. The sidewalk counselor then went with them over to our crisis pregnancy center. She spent time with them assuring them of support from the Center. She said the daughter was incredibly happy with her decision to keep her baby. She is due in November. (Saturday, March 21st) In other news, the St. Edward's Parish `Voice for the Unborn' Baby Bottle Campaign has completed their first collection. The initial count is expected to be over $700.00 we are still waiting for all the change to be counted. Jon Haslauer delivered 455 bottles to Frank Olguin at the State Knights of Columbus convention so this project will start moving in Northwest Arkansas.
